McKinley Park Playground Needs Some Love: Thirteen years after neighbors came together to rebuild the McKinley Park Playground following a devastating fire, the playground is ready for a little TLC. Friends of East Sacramento and the City of Sacramento Department of Youth, Parks & Community Enrichment are organizing a community work weekend Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20.

Volunteers will help clean and prepare the playground, spread wood chips and sand, make minor repairs, and refresh paint on portions of the play structure and entrance pillars. No experience is necessary, and the City will provide tools and guidance. Come for an hour or stay longer — it’s a great chance to help care for a playground that was built by the community.

And, That Means McKinley Park Playground is Closed on September 19 and 20th:  While volunteers fix up our beloved park, it will be closed.  But plenty of other parks are ready for you.  Please let friends and neighbors know that the playground is getting a revamp and to plan to enjoy the outdoors at another park this coming weekend.

City-Sponsored McKinley Park Trash Dash This Coming Sunday: Calling all Trash Dashers! Join us at McKinley Park on Sunday, September 20, from 10 a.m. until noon and help make our beautiful park shine.

THIS IS ONE OF OUR BIG, CITY-SPONSORED QUARTERLY TRASH DASHES—DONUTS AND PIZZA WILL BE PROVIDED!

We will meet near the Duck Pond at McKinley Park. We will have litter getters, trash bags and gloves ready for everyone. Just bring yourself, your family and your neighbors.

This is also a great opportunity for students or anyone else who needs community-service hours. We will gladly sign volunteer paperwork.

Come spend a couple of hours with some friendly neighbors while helping care for one of Sacramento’s most beautiful parks. We hope to see you there!

Save the Date: National Walk & Roll to School Day

National Walk & Roll to School Day is Wednesday, October 7, 2026, and MESA is planning to walk and roll to Miwok Middle School again this year.

Every day is a good day for students to walk, bike or roll to school. This national event is also an opportunity to bring attention to the importance of safe sidewalks, streets and crossings for students traveling to school.

We are planning to meet at 7:45 a.m. at 29th and G streets and then walk, roll or ride bikes up to Alhambra Boulevard and over to Miwok Middle School. If you need parking, Pine Cove is a short walk from the meeting location.

Please save the date. We will share additional information as plans are confirmed.

Nothing Happens Unless Someone Knows There’s a Problem

Ever wonder why something isn’t being done about an unsafe situation in the area? If it isn’t reported to the City, it is as if it isn’t happening. So, REPORT, REPORT, REPORT. We all need to report issues that are happening to create a record of the problem with the City. If you see something off in your area, report it.

Call 311 or, better yet, use the Sacramento 311 app to report issues.

Let Our Councilmember Know

Our councilmember, Phil Pluckebaum, needs to know about the issues we are facing. Blocked sidewalk along your child’s walk to school? Unleashed dogs causing concern at the park? Unsafe conditions in the park at night? Contact Councilmember Pluckebaum’s office.

Voicing your concerns at City Council meetings and at community events attended by Councilmember Pluckebaum is also encouraged.

Don’t Hesitate to Contact 911, SacPD or Fire When Necessary

If you see something that isn’t right in the neighborhood, REPORT IT. If you see a situation unfolding that could cause harm to anyone or anything, call 911.

For a police matter that is not an emergency, call the SacPD non-emergency number at 916-808-5471.

If you see a fire burning where it shouldn’t, call the Sacramento Fire Department at 916-808-1300. In an emergency, always call 911.

For other City issues, contact 311. Report non-emergency problems to 311, but if you know it is an emergency, don’t hesitate—call 911.
