Fix Prop 47 Petition Drive-By Events This Weekend:  Retail theft has been in the news a lot recently.  Part of the issue retailers and law enforcement agencies are facing is due to Proposition 47 which was approved by voters in 2014.  This proposition reclassified many crimes from felonies to misdemeanors.  This puts a crimp on what law enforcement can do when people are stealing as well as when people are selling or using drugs in public.  Jeff Reisig, Yolo County DA says “The initiative is an opportunity for all of us in California to fix the laws and to get back to a balanced place where we have accountability and meaningful consequences, including treatment. Ultimately, it’s going to solve this crisis that we’re seeing with retail theft and homelessness and drug addiction.”  Drive-by petition signing events are happening all over the state.  If you want to stop and sign a petition, here are some local places you can find volunteers ready to help:

McKinley Park Trash Dash Saturday, February 10th:  Plan to come out next Saturday for our monthly Trash Dash, and this is our quarterly event sponsored by the City of Sacramento Recycling and Solid Waste division.  We will be there, rain or shine!  This is a very family friendly event, and also a great opportunity for any local students to get community service credits.

Neighborhood Clean-up Grant Awardee:  With the help of Friends of East Sacramento, MESA has received a grant from the city’s Recycling and Solid Waste division to support our Trash Dash quarterly.  We will be focusing on the Northern Alhambra Corridor (B Street to J Street between 28th and Alhambra Blvd).  This of course includes McKinley Park and Miwok Middle School.  Our grant is $800 for this quarter and will cover supplies for our efforts and refreshments.  This grant is intended to help clean up our local areas while also increasing recycling education and efforts.  We’ll have trash grabbers and trash bags—as well as recycling bags to put anything that can be recycled in.  Our awesome Parks team will be out with the Tool Trailer so we can really get things done—such as cleaning out storm drains in the area and cleaning up some of the park areas.   Last November I had some skilled landscaper help trim the hedges by the library!  Come out, meet some new friends and make our neighborhood shiny. Our group will be out there from 10 am until noon, meeting up by the duck pond. Bring work gloves if you have them, and stay hydrated!  For more information on this event please visit the Facebook page here: https://fb.me/e/1QwSNhyyI or on Nextdoor here:  https://nextdoor.com/p/6wWhH3RMf4b7?utm_source=share&extras=MTM0OTc2NjQ%3D&utm_campaign=1706904189171

And Coffee and Donuts, as well as Pizza is on MESA!  With our grant we have coffee, donuts and pizza covered.  An army of volunteers marches on their stomaches, so we want you well fed, energized and hydrated tomorrow.  Bring along your thermal coffee cup for hot coffee or cold water, and stay after our Trash Dash for pizza on us.

SEE SOMETHING – SAY SOMETHING:  If you see something not right in the neighborhood, REPORT IT: We have all seen unsafe conditions in our neighborhood. If you see a situation unfolding that could cause harm to anyone, call 911. If you need to report something to our police force, but it isn’t an emergency situation, please call the SacPD non-emergency number at 916-808-5471. See a fire burning where it shouldn’t? Call Sac Metro Fire’s number at 916-228-3035. If you are having other issues, contact 311. Report issues to 311, but if you know it is an emergency, don’t hesitate—call 911.

DCR Reporting on the Homeless Response:  Want to find out what the city’s doing?  Check out the newly created dashboard with all the information on how they are addressing the homelessness crisis:  https://app.powerbigov.us/view?r=eyJrIjoiMDU1OGYwMDItM2M4MC00MDlhLWIwMTYtNGNiNDY1ZjRlNDE2IiwidCI6ImUzN2UwMWYyLTU0MWItNGZmZC1iOGQ0LTc2YWVlOGI4YzA4ZCJ9&pageName=ReportSection

ADA Class Action Lawsuit Against City and County of Sacramento for Blocking Mobility Disabled from Using Public Sidewalks:  The ADA lawsuit against the City and County of Sacramento continues, with it entering into the discovery stage.   The discovery will include obtaining information from the 311 reporting system on homeless blocking of sidewalks followed by depositions of City and County elected officials and employees. Attorney Louis Demas is continuing to work on the plaintiffs’ behalf on a pro bono basis so they will not have to pay attorneys fees. Expenses for discovery and depositions will be substantial. If you are able to help with expenses, please send a tax deductible donation to Friends of East Sacramento. Click here for more information.  And THANK YOU to everyone who has donated so far!  We have almost all of the expenses covered up to this point!

Keep Spreading the Word: Our distribution list just keeps growing. We continue to be over 310 subscribers strong!  We love sharing what’s going on in the neighborhood. Please encourage friends and families to join our mailing list. And remember, if you ever want to unsubscribe, we understand. Just hit the link at the bottom of this email and it will be taken care of.  See you around the neighborhood!
