MESA – Oct, 16, 2023 – Newsletter

City Council Meeting Tuesday:  Several MESA neighbors are going to City Council this Tuesday, October 17th and will be speaking up for our neighborhood.  Come to the meeting to show your support of law enforcement and to encourage the city to improve the livability of the city.  The council meeting is at 5 pm and the meeting is held in the council chambers located at 915 I Street, Sacramento, CA  95814.  You can park in the city parking lot kitty-corner to City Hall and get a parking voucher from the clerk.

Plan to speak:  Arrive before 5 pm and fill out one of the speaker slips that are located at the back of the room.  Turn it into the clerk.  You can turn in a slip at anytime during the meeting, but every speaker is called up in order of submission, so submit early to get to the head of the line.  There is no specific agenda item we are addressing, but will be speaking to Matters Not On Agenda.  This is the last time to speak at the meeting, and if the meeting runs long it may be some time before you are called up.  This week’s meeting most likely will not be a significantly long meeting.  Last week we were out by 7:20 pm.

The link to the agenda can be found on the city’s website here: http://sacramento.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=21

Submit an e-comment:  Can’t make it in person but want to submit your comment?  open the agenda, click on an agenda item you want to comment on (Public Comments-Matters Not on the Agenda) and click on the link to comment.

MESA Founding Members Meeting with Homeless Incident Management Team:  Later this month the six Founding Members of MESA are meeting with the various department heads that make up the city’s Incident Management Team.  This includes the City Manager, SacPD, Sac Fire, Code Enforcement and Animal Care departments.  We will be discussing impacts the homeless crisis is having on our community, and work with the city to find solutions to make our neighborhood more livable and to help those experiencing homelessness.

We Heard From You!:  Thanks to everyone who let us know you’d like to have a meeting.  MESA founders will have some good information to report back on after the Incident Management Team meeting.  Look for the meeting date and details in an upcoming newsletter.  While we can’t accommodate all schedules, if there are days/times that are preferable, send them along to info@midtowneastsac.org.

McKinley Park Trash Dash Sunday, October 22nd:  Come out for our monthly Trash Dash at McKinley Park. This is a very family friendly event, and also a great opportunity for any local students to get community service credits. We’ll have Parks donated trash grabbers and garbage bags, and a dumpster to fill up. Come out, meet some new friends and make our park shiny. Our group will be out there from 10 am until noon, meeting up by the duck pond. Bring work gloves if you have them, and stay hydrated!  For more information on this event please visit the Facebook page here: https://fb.me/e/Avp4M5F9

If We’ve Said it Once, We’ve Said it a Dozen Times:  If you see Something Not Right in the Neighborhood, REPORT IT: We have all seen unsafe conditions in our neighborhood. If you see a situation unfolding that could cause harm to anyone, call 911. If you need to report something to our police force, but it isn’t an emergency situation, please call the SacPD non-emergency number at 916-808-5471. See a fire burning where it shouldn’t? Call Sac Metro Fire’s number at 916-228-3035. If you are having other issues, contact 311. Report issues to 311, but if you know it is an emergency, don’t hesitate—call 911.

ADA Class Action Lawsuit Against City and County of Sacramento for Blocking Mobility Disabled from Using Public Sidewalks:  Attorney Louis Demas, on behalf of five mobility disabled Sacramentans, filed a lawsuit in federal court against the City and County for an injunction requiring removal of homeless tent encampments obstructions on public streets that block access for the disabled to use the sidewalks.  The City and County responded by filing motions to dismiss the lawsuit to avoid being accountable for the requirements of the American Disability Act. Last month the motions were heard in front of Chief U.S. District Judge Mueller who signaled the the lawsuit would not be dismissed and she issued an order setting the matter for further proceedings.  Attorney Demas is continuing to work on the plaintiffs’ behalf while waiting for the order from the judge. Private mediation of the lawsuit has been scheduled before a retired Sacramento Superior Court Judge. The costs for private mediation will be split among the parties but is substantial. Attorney Demas, is representing the plaintiffs on a pro bono basis so they will not have to pay attorneys fees.  If you are able to help with expenses, please send a tax deductible donation to Friends of East Sacramento. Click here for more information.

Keep Spreading the Word: Our distribution list just keeps growing. We continue to be over 300 subscribers strong!  We love sharing what’s going on in the neighborhood. Please encourage friends and families to join our mailing list. And remember, if you ever want to unsubscribe, we understand. Just hit the link at the bottom of this email and it will be taken care of.  See you around the neighborhood!
