MESA Founding Members Meeting with Homeless Incident Response Management Team: Last month the founding members of MESA met with the city’s Homeless Incident Management Team (HIMT). We met with City Manager Howard Chan, Assistant City Manager – Public Safety Mario Lara, HIMT Director Brian Pedro, Mayor Darrell Steinberg, SacPD Captain Stephen Moore and Lieutenant Zach Easton along with the mayor’s staffers Mary Lynne Vellinga (Chief of Staff), Jocelyn Navarro (D4 Liaison) and David Augusto (Community Engagement). The meeting was productive and MESA founders continued to work on how we can improve the safety and livability of our neighborhood. For the email summary Amy Gardner sent after the meeting, please click here. If you are interested in helping with some of the items MESA will be working on (advocating with County and State for policy changes and funding as well as coordinating with nonprofits who provide much needed services to people experiencing homelessness) please let us know. You can always email us at info@midtowneastsac.org.
General MESA Meeting November 19 at Noon. After our monthly Trash Dash we will be meeting near the McKinley Park Duck Pond and having a general meeting. Plan to meet us at there—bring your questions and concerns and we look forward to our November meeting.
McKinley Park Trash Dash Sunday, November 19th: Rain or Shine! Come out for our monthly Trash Dash at McKinley Park. This is a very family friendly event, and also a great opportunity for any local students to get community service credits.
Neighborhood Clean-up Grant Awardee: With the help of Friends of East Sacramento, MESA has received a grant from the city’s Recycling and Solid Waste division to support our November Trash Dash. We will be focusing on the Northern Alhambra Corridor (B Street to J Street between 28th and Alhambra Blvd). This of course includes McKinley Park and Miwok Middle School. Our grant is $800 for this quarter (hoping to get future grants) and will cover supplies for our efforts and refreshments. This grant is intended to help clean up our local areas while also increasing recycling education and efforts. We’ll have trash grabbers and trash bags—as well as recycling bags to put anything that can be recycled in. Our awesome Parks team will be out with the Tool Trailer so we can really get things done—such as cleaning out storm drains in the area and cleaning up some of the park areas. Come out, meet some new friends and make our neighborhood shiny. We want our neighborhood looking good for the Run to Feed the Hungry! Our group will be out there from 10 am until noon, meeting up by the duck pond. Bring work gloves if you have them, and stay hydrated! If We’ve Said it Once, We’ve Said it a Dozen Times: If you see Something Not Right in the Neighborhood, REPORT IT: We have all seen unsafe conditions in our neighborhood. If you see a situation unfolding that could cause harm to anyone, call 911. If you need to report something to our police force, but it isn’t an emergency situation, please call the SacPD non-emergency number at 916-808-5471. See a fire burning where it shouldn’t? Call Sac Metro Fire’s number at 916-228-3035. If you are having other issues, contact 311. Report issues to 311, but if you know it is an emergency, don’t hesitate—call 911.
Why Do We Keep Nagging You?: A big takeaway from the meeting we had with the Homeless Incident team was that they need issues to be reported in the 311 system. We have seen improvements with 311 reporting, as well as the Department of Community Response’s handling of issues we face here. So—we’ll keep nagging you to report, report, report.
