Today’s City Council Meeting: Please attend, e-comment or write your Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum and Mayor McCarty. Today at 5:00 p.m., the City Council will continue discussions regarding the police department budget. Councilmember Mai Vang has proposed eliminating all currently vacant positions within the department, reallocating those funds back to the city’s general budget.
When asked about this proposal at an earlier City Council meeting, Chief Lester responded that such a move would be “catastrophic.” You can view the exchange at the link below—the Mayor’s question begins around the 3:10 mark (approximately 8:41 p.m.):
City Council Meeting – May 13
The Sacramento Police Department is asking citizens to support law enforcement at today’s city council meeting. Please attend the meeting and advocate for preserving the police budget—without cuts to the vacant positions.
There will be two items on the Discussion Calendar before the police budget item, one of which concerns the new City Manager position. The timing is uncertain, as it will depend on the length of discussion and public comment. While you can arrive later, you must be present before the budget discussion begins in order to submit your speaker form.
If you cannot attend, please put an e-comment in. You can do this here: https://sacramento.granicus.com/GeneratedAgendaViewer.php?view_id=21&event_id=5403 and submit an e-comment here.
Get involved with your City government. The mayor and councilmembers recently approved an 8% raise for themselves. This is in light of a budget deficit and many city programs being cut due to lack of money. Do you think cutting the police budget is more important than our local city council giving themselves a raise? Speak Up! Let them know where you stand on the police budget and their salary increases. They are talking about a new tax too to raise city funds. Before another tax increase, they need to know what your thoughts are on it.

Nothing Happens Unless Someone Knows There’s a Problem. Ever wonder why something isn’t being done about an unsafe situation in the area? If it isn’t reported to the City, it is as if it isn’t happening. So, REPORT, REPORT, REPORT. We all need to report issues that are happening to create a record of the problem with the city. If you see something off in your area, report it. It has been discovered that the only way the City is responding to issues regarding People Experiencing Homelessness (PEH) is if a 311 report is filed. Call 311, or better yet, use the 311 app to report issues with PEH. Here’s the link to the app: https://www.cityofsacramento.
Vandalism Needs to be Reported: Lots of businesses in the area have been having windows broken, trees and landscaping destroyed and other forms of vandalism committed to their propery. Report criminal activity to SacPD non-emergency number at 916-808-5471.
