Tash Dash

May 21, 2024

McKinley Park Trash Dash Tomorrow, May 18th:  Plan to come out this Saturday for our monthly Trash Dash, and this is our quarterly event sponsored by the City of Sacramento Recycling and Solid Waste division.  We will be there, and Mother Nature has a sunny day in store for us!  This is a very family friendly event, and also a great opportunity for any local students to get community service credits.

Neighborhood Clean-up Grant Awardee:  With the help of Friends of East Sacramento, MESA has received a grant from the city’s Recycling and Solid Waste division to support our Trash Dash quarterly.  We will be focusing on the Northern Alhambra Corridor (B Street to J Street between 28th and Alhambra Blvd).  This of course includes McKinley Park and Miwok Middle School.  Our grant is $800 for this quarter and will cover supplies for our efforts and refreshments.  This grant is intended to help clean up our local areas while also increasing recycling education and efforts.  We’ll have trash grabbers and trash bags—as well as recycling bags to put anything that can be recycled in.  Our awesome Parks team will be out with the Tool Trailer so we can really get things done—such as pruning some of the landscape plants and cleaning up planting beds.

Come out, meet some new friends and make our neighborhood shiny. Our group will be out there from 10 am until noon, meeting up by the duck pond. Bring work gloves if you have them, and stay hydrated!  For more information on this event please visit the Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/956007516186034/

And Coffee and Donuts, as well as Pizza is on MESA!  With our grant we have coffee, donuts and pizza covered.  An army of volunteers marches on their stomaches, so we want you well fed, energized and hydrated tomorrow.  Bring along your thermal cup for hot coffee, hot chocolate or cold water, and stay after our Trash Dash for pizza on us.

Look for our signs at the park!  And for volunteers to check in, the city has gone paperless.  Here is the link for this weekend’s event

Protecting Nature at Sutter’s Landing Park: The City of Sacramento is updating its

Master Plan for Sutter’s Landing Park providing an opportunity to increase protection,

restoration, and public access to nature enjoyed by many Midtown and East Sacramento residents.

The Park provides our closest access to see wildlife, enjoy trails, and visit the American River Parkway. Friends of Sutter’s Landing Park and other organizations are urging residents to write to the City of Sacramento supporting the adoption of a new nature-focused Master Plan. Letters should be emailed to the City at DRepan@cityofsacramento.orgClick here for more information.

ADA Class Action Lawsuit Against City and County of Sacramento for Blocking Mobility Disabled from Using Public Sidewalks:  The ADA lawsuit against the City and County of Sacramento continues, with it entering into the discovery stage.   The discovery will include obtaining information from the 311 reporting system on homeless blocking of sidewalks followed by depositions of City and County elected officials and employees. Attorney Louis Demas is continuing to work on the plaintiffs’ behalf on a pro bono basis so they will not have to pay attorneys fees. Expenses for discovery and depositions will be substantial. If you are able to help with expenses, please send a tax deductible donation to Friends of East Sacramento. Click here for more information.  And THANK YOU to everyone who has donated so far!  We have almost all of the expenses covered up to this point!
