Round 2 Tree Planting at McKinley Park Tomorrow: East Sacramento Preservation Neighborhood Association has Phase 2 tree planting going on tomorrow in McKinley Park. Meet up at F Street and Alhambra (across the street from the Greek Orthodox Church) at 9 am. The City Staff has already augered the holes for planting. City staff with give a demonstration on how to plant and to stake the trees. The trees are provided by the Sacramento Tree Foundation supported by a grant from SMUD. We volunteers will need to clear the pre-augered hole with shovels, plant, and stake the trees. Finally, mulch will be placed around the newly planted tree to help with moisture control as well as providing organic nourishment to the trees. This is a good opportunity to give back to our community. It’s a lot of fun. Invite some of your friends/neighbors to join us. Please RSVP to Will Green at wgreen@surewest.net

City of Sacramento Budget Deficit-Please Submit Comments: The City is inviting community input regarding what services should be prioritized as they face major deficits now, which are worsening for the foreseeable future.
Yesterday evening several of our neighbors attended one of the City’s three Budget Community Meetings. The news is troubling. The City is facing a $66 million deficit for the next fiscal year, which is projected to rise to $122.2 million by Fiscal Year 2028. The alarming deficit situation is “structural” – i.e. not caused by a recession, inflation, or loss of revenue, but rather by having committed to more programs and services than they can pay for. Should a recession occur, state funding be reduced, or other problems occur, it will be worse.
Former Councilman Jeff Harris was there, and spoke briefly during the public comment period. He noted: 1) the City is actually very well funded. 2) The structural deficit was created by the City Council implementing new ongoing programs when they only had one-time funding.
The City provided four possible deficit reduction strategies which are:
- Revenue enhancement
- Discretionary program reductions
- Mandated program delivery change
- Mandated program reduction.
You can take the survey at the link below to weigh in on what is important to you and what you think the City should spend less on. It takes less than 5 minutes.

The discovery will include obtaining information from the 311 reporting system on homeless blocking of sidewalks followed by depositions of City and County elected officials and employees.
