MESA – July 31, 2023 – Newsletter

Summer is going strong, and things are heating up with lots of end of summer events.  Hope to see you out and about in the neighborhood!

District Attorney Neighborhood Nuisance Abatement Questionnaire:  District Attorney Thien Ho’s office is asking Sacramento City residents to complete a questionnaire if you have been affected by a homeless encampment.  Please find the form here, and fill out one per encampment that you have been affected by.  If you have any questions, feel free to email sacwalksafe@gmail.com.

Encampment Cleared from 28th and C, Now Large Encampment at 30th and C Street.  After the large encampment was cleared at 28th and C Streets, several people are now living in tents, motorhomes and unregistered cars along 30th and C Street, and along Alhambra Blvd in that vicinity.  With Mayor Steinberg representing this area, he has been informed of the issue.  He visited the area last week.  SacPD has also been out to the area.  Please help inform the City about this encampment and the vehicles by filing 311 reports and writing our Mayor.  He can be reached at dsteinberg@cityofsacramento.org and his assistant for the D4 area Jocelyn Navarro can be reached at JONavarro@cityofsacramento.org.  With potential changes to the city’s homeless response, emailing City Manager Howard Chan at hchan@cityofsacramento.org and Assistant City Manager – Public Safety Mario Lara at MLara@cityofsacramento.org may also be prudent.

Special City Council Meeting August 1st at 12:30 pm:  Tomorrow, Tuesday, our City Council is holding a special meeting to address the homeless response and who is responsible for it.  Mayor Steinberg is proposing to delegate the identification of “Safe Ground” managed homeless encampments to City Manager Howard Chan.  This would be a big change to how areas for shelters are identified and set up.  There are several other items on the agenda.  Please plan to go to the meeting at City Hall tomorrow.  Can’t go but want to participate?  You can call in for public comment.  Not available during the meeting?  Submit an e-comment before the meeting.  Here’s everything you need to know to participate anyway you can:

National Night Out Tomorrow, Tuesday August 1st:  MESA is teaming up with several local groups for a fun National Night Out.  This is the 40th Annual National Night Out (NNO) and is a great opportunity to join up with our local law enforcement groups.  This event gives us a chance to support our local officers and strengthen our relationship to reduce crime in our neighborhood.  Plan to come out to McKinley Park for an ice cream social hosted by MESA, East Sac Preservation, East Sacramento Community Association and East Sac Chamber of Commerce.

Let’s have fun on a beautiful summer evening:  Bring the family, plan a picnic followed by some cool ice cream, and bring some fun games to play.  We’ll have jump ropes, corn hole, hula hoops and lots of other activities to enjoy.  Last year we had a great turnout of the community and SacPD, Parole, Probation, Sheriff and FBI.  And our local Sac Metro Fire crew always enjoys getting what ice cream we don’t finish.  Ice Cream from Gunthers.  Sprinkles and toppings provided by East Sac Chamber members.  See you Tuesday night, August 1st from 7 pm to 9 pm! And to keep it interesting, the sprinklers are set to go off at 9 pm, which could be refreshing, or quite a shock!

SacPD Military Equipment Use Survey:  SacPD has been holding a series of meetings to discuss their annual report on military equipment use.  If you weren’t able to attend, you can use this link to provide input on the use of equipment that has been defined as military by the state legislature:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeDeh30FU3cxy48JISQtucRfY-y_scR78KNOX0cvr8pZqDGyA/viewform  East Command Captain Moore also sent along a copy of the draft summary to provide context.  The draft summary can be found here.

Keep Spreading the Word: Our distribution list just keeps growing. We are over 300 subscribers strong now!  We love sharing what’s going on in the neighborhood. Please encourage friends and families to join our mailing list. And remember, if you ever want to unsubscribe, we understand. Just hit the link at the bottom of this email and it will be taken care of.  See you around the neighborhood!
