Hi Neighbors,

Here’s a quick message about what’s going on in our neighborhood.

Yellow Brick Road: We’ve been working hard to have a Safe Route to School for students walking and biking from Midtown to Sutter Middle School. While we’ve had pledges of support from both Mayor Steinberg at our meeting at McKinley Park last summer and from Councilmember Valenzuela during a City Council meeting, the City has not done any real actions to have a safe route for students. Parents and neighbors have been chaperoning students along G Street from 28th Street along to Sutter Middle School, with attention paid to the G Street underpass. We’ve also had campers in the underpass keep an eye out for issues and keep the south sidewalk clear. Since December we have not had a clear sidewalk for students to use. The Interim Director of the Department of Community Response, Mario Lara, has said that the only way to get attention paid to our safe route is with recorded 311 reports. Please report any sidewalk obstructions, illegal activity or other safety hazards along our G Street route to 311. If you would like to show your support for our Yellow Brick Road, please contact Mario Lara at mlara@cityofsacramento.org. We want our kids, and neighbors, to have a safe way to get to school and between Midtown and East Sac.

McKinley Park Trash Dash this Saturday: Come out for our monthly Trash Dash at McKinley Park. This is a very family friendly event, and also a great opportunity for any local students to get community service credits. We’ll have Parks donated trash grabbers and garbage bags, and a dumpster to fill up. Come out, meet some new friends and make our park shiny. For more information on this event and other Sacramento Picks It Up events, please visit the Facebook page here: https://fb.me/e/37U7IZG3j

Neighborhood Watch: Several neighbors from across Midtown and East Sacramento expressed interest in starting up Neighborhood Watch (NW) programs in their areas. SacPD has a dedicated team for NW and is in touch with MESA about setting up programs here. The author of this newsletter has her block’s first meeting coming up early February. Email info@midtowneastsac.org to be included on future messages.

Some Reminders:

Report Illegal Activity: The City of Sacramento and DCR want to make sure we know to report criminal activity to 311. If there is an emergency, don’t hesitate to call 911. And if it is a police non-emergency matter, please call 916-808-5471. See Something – Say Something. By reporting suspicious or illegal activity we are letting our City know what is going on here. Without speaking up, we won’t experience any reduction in crime.

Keep Spreading the Word: Our distribution list just keeps growing. We are at 255 subscribers, and we love sharing what’s going on in the neighborhood. Please encourage friends and families to join our mailing list. And remember, if you ever want to unsubscribe, we understand. Just hit the link at the bottom of this email and it will be taken care of.
