Keep The Trees Alive at McKinley Park – Come Out This Saturday to Help:  Over these past 18 months several of the newly planted trees in McKinley Park have struggled to survive, especially in these triple digit summer days.  City Parks Dept. isn’t properly maintaining these new plantings.  Deeper watering is needed for the first 3-5 years of a newly transplanted tree’s life.  Until recently the Parks staff stated that the trees would have to learn to survive on surface watering.  Often park’s surface sprinklers malfunction.  Then no water is provided to the tree.  Parks Dept budget has been cut and they are understaffed for the number of parks in Sacramento.

Parks Dept is wanting neighborhood groups to keep closer eyes on the condition of our parks and its newly planted trees.  Park Staff are also willing to work with us to find better solutions for how the newly planted trees not only survive, but thrive.

Call to Action:  On August 30th from 8am-10am  we need volunteers to spread about 7 yards of mulch to all of these trees.  Dennis Harris, Volunteer Coordinator, for YCEP, (City Parks) will be providing tools, wheelbarrows, and the mulch will be waiting for our arrival.

Meet at the curve in G Street off H Street not far from the south end of the McKinley Park Pond.  You need to bring yourself, a pair of work gloves, and a maybe a friend.

We can be finished in 2 hours.  I hope you are as excited as I am about giving back to the future of the tree canopy in McKinley Park.  Please RSVP to wgreen@surewest.net

McKinley Park Trash Dash Sunday!  Calling all Trash Dashers. Come out to our beautiful park and make it shine for all to see. We will have some heat, so bring a hat, sunblock and stay hydrated. We will meet up by the Duck Pond at McKinley Park. Lots of friendly faces will be out to help us clean up around the park. We will have our litter getters, trash bags, gloves and lots of friendly faces out to make our park shiny.
This is a great opportunity for anyone that needs some community service hours. We will gladly sign any volunteer paperwork!  Find more info on Facebook and on Nextdoor.

McKinley Park Issues:  In the last few weeks we have been having people driving up into the park, driving along the sidewalks, doing donuts in the grass, and running over the curbs.  Yesterday vehicles were driving next to the tennis courts in the running path.  If you see this happening, please call Sac Police at either 916-808-5471 or 911.  When there is a crime in progress do not hesitate to call SacPD directly.  For other issues, including people camping in the park, please contact 311 either by phone or through the app.  To use 311 online, go here: https://311.cityofsacramento.org/s/ and to get the app, follow this link.

Nothing Happens Unless Someone Knows There’s a Problem.Ever wonder why something isn’t being done about an unsafe situation in the area?  If it isn’t reported to the City, it is as if it isn’t happening.  So, REPORT, REPORT, REPORT.  We all need to report issues that are happening to create a record of the problem with the city.  If you see something off in your area, report it.  It has been discovered that the only way the City is responding to issues regarding People Experiencing Homelessness (PEH) is if a 311 report is filed.  Call 311, or better yet, use the 311 app to report issues with PEH.  Here’s the link to the app: https://www.cityofsacramento.gov/information-technology/311/sac311-smartphone-app

What Can You Do to Help?:  MESA is a group of neighbors who are working to improve the livability of our neighborhood.  We don’t know what is happening unless you let us know.  Tell us when you hear about an unsafe situation in the area.  How can you spread the word?

But Don’t Hesitate to Contact 911, Sac Police or Fire When Necessary. If you see something not right in the neighborhood, REPORT IT. We have all seen unsafe conditions in our neighborhood. If you see a situation unfolding that could cause harm to anyone or anything, call 911. If you need to report something to our police force, but it isn’t an emergency situation, please call the SacPD non-emergency number at 916-808-5471. See a fire burning where it shouldn’t? Call Sac Metro Fire’s number at 916-228-3035. If you are having other issues, contact 311. Report issues to 311, but if you know it is an emergency, don’t hesitate—call 911.
